Welcome!/Tere Tulemast!

In this blog, I mostly write in English, although when I write about things that may also be important for my grandparents, then I also translate my posts into Estonian.

Plato: The Failure of Democracy

Tervist,

Hi all,

I am sorry that I never wrote about my last journey from RSA back to Estonia but as I have now been in Estonia for almost a month, I will not going to do it at all this time (nothing that important did not happen there anyhow)

What is important is the present, where I have to do a philosophical speech on "Why the wise consider democracy the worst?". Now, while I have been trying to write this speech, I have read through many-many good materials and for myself I discovered Plato's Republic, which has lots of great material for me and my speech. More importantly, I found this one material, which is like an analyse for the book and I think every person, who is interested in gathering more knowledge and widening their "horizon", should read it through - it is not too long and it has lots of good ideas (especially I loved Allegory of the Cave), so I will now add this thing here also and I hope you enjoy it:

Party at Pretoria

Tervist,

Parimate soovidega,
Sander Gansen

Hi people,

On the Friday, after waking up at seven and making myself yet again ready for the new day, we went to have breakfast with Patrick (to the kitchen) and later as Patrick was going to school and then to Oppikoppi music festival for the rest of the week, I wished him good time and then went to cottage to do some things in computer, until Helen and Anthony came home at nine. Then I quickly put my things together and I was ready for Helen to take me to Gautrain, after taking Anthony back to work. In station, I paid for my ticket and waited eighteen minutes for the train to come and then took off to Pretoria with it. Half an hour later, after having some nap and listening to the text our driver was telling the passengers (“Right now we are moving one hundred kilometres per hour and I know that you would like to go with one hundred and sixty five kilometres per hour, but do not worry, as we are getting to that speed right away”), we arrived at Pretoria and there I took the bus, which dropped me just in the gate of DSG.
When I arrived to that school, I had a nice chat to the security guy there, until Angela came to fetch me with Tamryn. Next we went to schools tuck shop, where we bought some coffee and tea, just after Mikayla also joined us. There we were chatting and drinking our drinks, then made a little photo session (as girls where wearing their school uniform the last time – next term they are getting new ones) and then went up to the school, to stay in Tamryn’s room for a while, until we decided to take all of their bags outside, where soon Tamryn’s mother fetched us and the things and took us to their home (after also fetching Tamryn’s brother from his school). When we got to their home, we watched some things from TV, ate some pizza and then while girls where dressing, I was playing some Play station 3 games with Tamryn’s brother. When girls got ready, Tamryn’s father took us with the girls to some guys, who turned eighteen this week, party (I am still not sure, whose party it was). After having a lot fun there, we were again picked up at eleven and when we got home, I just immediately went to bed to have a nice sleep.
In the morning, I woke up around six, brushed my teeth and did a little walking outside and then went back in to have a little extra nap. Later at eight, it was time to end my nap, as Mikayla’s mother (also named Angela) had come to fetch her, Angela and me. Next we went to some shopping mall, where we waited Helen to join us. Then we took Angela’s stuff from one car to the other one and went to have nice breakfast all together – this time I really felt, that I wanted to have a nice British breakfast and that I had, with chino frappe. After eating, we said good-bye to Mikayla and her mother and went to see Nana, before her trip to Canada. Had a nice chat with her and she gave me as a present a Scrabble dictionary :). After that we drove back to Johannesburg.
When we got to Johannesburg, we quickly finished our cooking and soon Anna the Estonian teacher, who Helen knows, came to have lunch with us. We had most wonderful chat with her (and as I was worrying, it really was unnatural to talk in Estonian for me) and lunch was great too. After she left, I read a bit and did some other things on the computer + changed after being in same clothes for two days already. Then after several hours of spending time in cottage, I came back to main house and we watched “Grown Ups” together with Angela from TV (and still I am happy that in Estonia I do not have a TV). Later I started writing this blog and now as I am finishing it and everybody else went to sleep, I am going to sleep soon too – just after watching some episodes of How I met your mother.

Best regards,
Sander Gansen

Inter house arts thing at Kingsmead! + some extra arts

Parimate soovidega,
Sander Gansen

Good Evening,

(PS! - Made a huge mistake yesterday, while writing this thing here, but I now corrected it, I hope)

In the morning, after waking up and washing myself, I went to eat some breakfast (a grapefruit and some bananas) and then came back to cottage, where I spent a bit of my time in computer, then unpacked my things from my bag, just to make them nice and re-pack into my bag. Later I read a bit of Sherlock Holmes and then after I got to be rather exhausted from reading, I stopped it, put the book back onto its place and then returned to kitchen, where I talked to Johanna and got to know that in the last five years, she has built a really-really nice house for herself (which she also has designed by herself), that has three bedrooms and is all made out from rock – I also got to see some pictures of the house and her daughter and son, who are already a bit over twenty (so people, learn how to clean, do the laundry and cook, and in some years you also will have just enough money to build your own house, without using  any bank debt - and really doing this kind of a job, is really admirable and people who do different houseworks, should be praised). Soon Helen arrived to home and then we just chatted a bit and soon ate some nice muffins, that Johanna had just finished making. After eating some of those nice things, it was time for me and Helen to leave home and go to see some art – our first stop was some kind of a little art shop that was rather nice and had all kinds of decorations made in South Africa. Later we also went to see one shop, where they have different kinds of South American stuff. Next Helen dropped me of at some other art galleries and then she returned to work. So now I did a little trip in those galleries and then went back to Rosebank, where I bought one fruit juice, without any extra sugar and dairy products (in flavour of banana, strawberry, black currant and other stuff like that) and a roasted banana toast, which also was rather tasteful. After eating and drinking a bit, I visited the books store for a second and then went to Helen’s school (Kingsmead), where Helen soon fetched me and took back to home, so I could rest a bit with load music.
After all of that, I also had a nice supper soon and then we went to Kingsmead, where they had this inter house arts thing, which was just superb (girls had made a play, consisting one extra sketch, one duet song, one choir song, one dance and one big play and each house had one country as a main theme – there was USA, France and United Kingdom aka Great Brittan). After that, we came home, where I chatted a bit with Anthony and Helen and then came here to write this nice blog. Now as it is getting ready, I am going to see some things on the internet and then watch some How I met your mother episodes, before going to sleep. Also tomorrow I am not going to write anything, as already at nine, I am going to Pretoria by train and there I will meet Angela and Mikayla and Tamryn, who with we are going to go to some guys’ birthday, from St Alban’s College, in the evening and will stay for a night in Pretoria. But now I am going to end this writing and be good and talk to you soon.

Best regards,
Sander Gansen

Military History Museum & lots of bargaining with Africans

Tervist,

Parimate soovidega,
Sander Gansen

Hi gals and guys,

In the morning, after getting myself ready for another interesting day, I ate some breakfast and continued reading about how to study. Later, when Helen came home, it was time for me to sit into the car and let Helen take me to the Military History Museum. When I reached to the museum and tried to buy a ticket, the guy told me that he does not have any change right now and so we made deal that I will pay to him later. Next I just walked into the museum and did a long trip, to see different air planes, tanks, submarines, boats, guns, swords, uniforms etc. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take any pictures, so you people, who are interested in war or guns or other stuff like that, must come to Johannesburg, South Africa and go to this museum, which really was fascinating. After spending over two hours in that museum, it was time for me to go to Rosebank - so I now paid the guy the ticket fee and asked for directions how to go to Rosebank.
Seventeen minutes later I arrived to that mall and the first thing I did, was to go to cinema. Bought myself a ticket for "Horrible Bosses" and after buying some candies, it was time for me to go to the movie hall, where soon the movie started. I must say it was not some really-really great movie, but I did quite like the plot, as it was something very different from all of the movies I have previously seen in my life. In all I would give 3.5/5 to this movie (it is not three, but does not really deserve the whole four either - it was funny, but nothing too great). While watching that movie, I realised one thing - one quite important thing. The thing is, that I think I am not a cat person and to be more honest, I dislike cats - especially their jumping around and this noise they make - it might be nice while it is a day but when it gets dark, it freaks me a bit out and I do not like myself to be surprised too much - especially I do not like to be scared. Although I am not a fan of cats, I must say it is just domestic ones, as I still do like lions, tigers etc.
Next after the film (and going to toilet) I made up my mind to go to this African market once more and this time I wanted to buy some stuff as souvenir's, that would be purely African. I did already expect and when I got there, I saw, that most of the stuff there was quite overpriced and so I went there and started to bargain from the very first moment. At first I started by telling them that I'm a poor boy from north-east Europe country called Estonia and in some time (which I had a lot there) I moved into bringing in my mother into the thing, by telling the guys (and some girls) that my mother is going to have a birthday soon (which was not a lie, as her birthday is on 11th of August). Later I got into telling them that I only have such and such of amount of money left (which was again truth) and so it was just take it or leave it for them and in the end, all of this got me being almost broke and completely in a hurry, so just to get rid of the good African-sellers (they are almost as good salesman as I am :P) I just bought a lot of different stuff (still getting the price really down and I think I am going to use it all as presents for my family an friends).
After more than two and a half hours of shopping there, Helen arrived to pick me up and before going to home, we fetched Jessie the dog (who was at vet, as she has some bad worms right now - she is really old) and Paula (who was at tennis practice). When we got home, we soon had this nice supper - pasta with chicken and corn. Later girls went to watch some TV before going to sleep and Helen had to do some more work in computer, so I started to write my blog. Now, as I am getting this thing ready, I will eat some nice carrot cake, while drinking tea and chatting with my friends. Later I am off to watch some How I met your mother and then it is time for me to go to have some nice sleep. So right now I am leaving you people here and I will get going.

Best regards,

Rotary meeting vol. 2

Seejärel tõi Helen mind tagasi koju, kus jätkasin informatsiooni läbi töötlemist - lõpuks mingi hetk tuli koolist koju Georgina, kellega me sõime kiirelt kahekesti lõunat, mille Johanna meile valmistas.

Good evening,

In the morning, after making myself ready for the day and eating my breakfast, I finally started to write my speech for tonight's appearance at this Rotary meeting (or not writing the speech, but gathering different information about Estonia, as up until today I really did not know much about Estonia, it's history, economics etc + why I did not write the speech is because I made myself a promise some time ago, that I would never do this mistake ever again, of writing my speeches fully ready, as I always fail with fully written speeches - they are either too long or... too long...). Anyway, after two or three hours of searching the information about Estonia, Helen and Anthony came home and then I took my school uniform from cottage and Helen took a bottle of some kind of a liqueur and then me and her where off to Parktown Boys High, where we started to look for Mr. Stipple.  Every time we got near to him, he had already went to another place, but after ten minute or so, we still did get to him and then gave him the clothes, thanked him and handed him the bottle of Angelica.
Next Helen took me back to home, where I resumed looking for the information on Estonia, that I could use in my speech. After a while, Georgina had already come home and Johanna had made some lunch for her and me, so I made a little pause, ate a bit and had some lovely talk with both of them. After this little resting, it was time to go back to work and so I started to look for some more information (now about Estonian culture and cuisines, as I had already done most of the other things I had wanted to). By the time it was three or four o clock, I had almost got my things ready - or I at least knew almost what I wanted to talk about, so next it was time to practice a bit and by doing that I could see that what things should I leave out - after one hour of that, I had shortened my document of thoughts from six pages to three pages and then I made up my mind to stop this thing and just when I would got there, I would improvise something and it would all be great.
Soon I had rested a bit an it was already six o clock, so I went to car with Helen, Paula and Georgina and we started our drive to the place where the Rotary event was going to take place (somewhere near Sandton) and on our way there, for making it less boring, Helen started to tell us the numbers from the licence plates of the cars also driving and we had to calculate in our head what was the sum of those numbers - in the end it turned out to be that I just told every sum of every car that passed us :D. Soon we got there, Helen left me there and girls would go and get a supper somewhere near. When I got to the Rotary meeting, I had some nice chat with all the people there and when it came to supper time, I ate a bit of lasagne and some spinach thing + panna cotta and some other sweet thing + guys from Rotary bought me a drink (they were almost going to buy me a whisky or something, before I stopped them, as I did not feel like that - but the weird part was that although Rotary has said in their applications that no drinking for me, they were the ones who almost bought me alcohol this time).
Later it was time for people to tell their announcements (for example one of them told us how he had fulfilled his childhood dream of getting a fast car - he had bought a new Ferrari just three days ago) and after that it was time for me to give my speech about Estonia and after me, there was one American exchange student, who gave his speech, which was just about his life here and other stuff like that (for example he told us the story how his car was nationalized - or that's how he expressed the thing that it had been stolen, while he was under the shower). After that we were asked some more questions and then many people came to me to thank me for telling them, where Estonia is and they where all telling me that my English is great (suck that teacher, who gives me nothing better than a C - mostly just a D) + there was this exchange student from Brazil, who asked my number and name, as he was going to ask me to go to some kind of a house party this weekend - we will see what happens. Anyway after that eventually it was time for me to go back to home, as Helen had come to fetch me already. When we got home, I had a nice chat with Anthony and Helen and then now started to write my blog. As I'm finishing it now, I'll go to sleep, just after I have watched some episodes of How I met your mother. No I'm going, but before, I'll copy you the points that I might have used in my speech today.

Park Acoustics & Scrabble-scrabble-scrabble

Good Evening,

I'm going to quickly tell that today and yesterday haven't been days full of activities and they have been more like just resting and sleeping. On Saturday, after waking up and reading a bit how to study (I've been going to school for over ten years and I think that I really haven't learned how to really study), it was time for Patrick to take Angela, Paula and me to Pretoria, where we went to this concert called Park Acoustics. When we got there, we started to have a little picnic (we packed some foods with us from Johannesburg and bought lots of drinks from there) and after a while eight of Angela's schoolmates joined us and we continued to listen to the music (apparently I had slept while the third band was on, but all of the others, were great). Later, after four, Helen came to fetch us and took us back to Johannesburg. When others went to home, I did a little trip to Killarney's Mall and back to rent some DVD's - on the way back, I got a bit lost, but soon I was back on my way. At home we played a game of Scrabble with Nana, Angela and Georgina, ate some supper and after others went to sleep, I chatted with my friends over the internet, until I also went to sleep (after watching some How I met your mother). Today I just woke up, made myself ready for the day, read some Sherlock Holmes and then played a game of Scrabble again with Nana, until we had lunch (this time, as the time before, I won again). After lunch, I read some more and then played some more Scrabble with Nana (I won again), until we had supper and then Helen went to take Nana and Angela back to Pretoria, so I was left here to write my blog. Now as it will get done, I'll watch a movie, maybe chill with some of Patrick's friends, who just came over and then go to sleep or do something else. Anyhow I'm now ending the writing and be on my way.

Inter house athletics and a science fair...

Tervist,

Hi people,

In the morning, after making myself ready for the day, I went to kitchen, where we had a nice conversation with Helen, until Paula and her friend, who was here for a night, also came to kitchen. Next we ate some breakfast and at half past seven we took the friend back to her home and then went to Wits, where they held a science fair, where Paula was taking place in. When we arrived there, Helen and I helped Paula to put here things up (she did an experiment on plants and watering them with water, coffee, bear, coca-cola and milk) and I gave a little look on all of the other experiments, which I didn't think that were so amazing either. At half past eight Helen took me to Parktown, where the boys had inter house athletics contest. The thing was fine, but I really went there just to say goodbye the guys and just talk to them a bit, as mostly I don't really enjoy watching sports, but I like to do it myself.
Then at quarter to ten Helen came to fetch me and then she drove to her school, as she had to do some more marking of the exams and put the to some kind of a register and so I went to Rosebank Mall, where I just chilled for two and a half hour and then in the end I bought one book and unfortunately couldn't buy the gloves I would have liked to buy from Diesel as they where a bit small for me. After this little shopping, Helen took me back home and went to Pretoria to fetch Angela and granny Nana. At home I just read a bit and when they came back, we had some tea with Nana and talked about life. In the mean time Paul came to here to give us a springbok, that he had shot for Anthony in Kalahari some days ago. After that I read a bit more Sherlock Holmes and then we played some Scrabble with Nana, Georgina and Angela - I won the game :) (they are native English speaker and I'm not). Later we had supper, talked a bit more until others went to sleep, so I wrote the blog. Now as it will get ready, I'll be talking a bit with Angela, then watch some How I met your mother and then go to sleep.

What happens if in the wrong time you stand in the wrong place - or was it all wrong?

Tervist,

Hi people,

In the morning I woke up a bit too late (quarter past six) and then quickly made myself ready so Helen could take me to school - while driving there, Paula was talking about a competition or something like that on Science, where she was supposed to go and while listening I thought it might be a good idea to also go there if I'd get a chance. When I arrived to school, I went straightly to class, as it was really cold out side - again. Before we could get into business studies class, I had some chat with some matrics, who had good humour and who knew where Estonia is situated. In the first lesson, we didn't really learn anything again, as teacher was marking papers and guys where doing homework for other subjects, but we did make a lot of jokes and fun on each other, which made me think that on good thing about all-boys school is that you can make a lot of jokes, that normally, when you'd be with the girls, you couldn't do, as they would get offended, but guys usually don't mind those, sometimes pretty rough jokes and just answer with the same ones back at you. Still, no matter how bad the humour sense of most girls is (one thing that guys usually are looking for a long time is a girl with a good humour sense - it means that they'll get your jokes :D), I love spending time with girls and I'll better just make less rough and dry jokes, so I could still chill with them.
Next lesson was Science, where now I tried to look at the teacher with a new look, trying to use the knowledge that ma dad once gave me - that means, even if the teacher isn't the best teacher, surely she has some other good traits. This time the teacher had her little child with her and for example she just looked like she is a good mother for it. Then as a third lesson, we had English, where we still continued analysing the poem by Wilfred Owen and we just chatted a little bit and the teacher asked me to talk something about Estonia and answer to some questions - which I did. After this lesson, we had an assembly, then break for eating and then some more of the assembly, before the last lesson for the day - Mathematics. In that lesson I also tried to look at the teacher from another angle and found that even if she's not the best teacher of Mathematics (comparing with our teacher), she still has quite a good sense of humour and she seems pretty humane.
When the lesson ended, I went to the top-gate, where there were some other boys from my class and some other ones. They all were waiting for the bus, which would have taken them to Roedean's school, where this HIP2B2 thing was taking place. While I was there, waiting for Helen to fetch me, the boys where trying to talk me into going with them and when their teacher said they have one free place, I just couldn't say no any more. When Helen came to Parktown, we were supposed to drive to Roedean anyhow (to fetch Georgina) and then Helen just left me there as she was going to fetch Paula later from there too. In school-yard I found some girls, who told me where I had to go and there I got back together with other buys from Parktown and as the organizers of the event offered cupcakes, we ate first and then second and then I felt sick as I hat eaten too much sugar. Before the competition started, I also had some chat with some good-looking and nice girls from that school and other schools, that had also come to this event. After a while the thing started and in the beginning it was kind of a lame, but in time it got better and by the end I had helped Parktown boys to get the third place, which means we all got some sub-woofers as an award. After the event, Helen came to fetch Paula and I and took us home, where I tested those things out and then ate some dinner, watched "Dinner for Schmucks" with Georgina, wrote blog and now as it's getting ready, I'll be going to watch some more episodes of How I met your mother and then I'll go to sleep.
