Welcome!/Tere Tulemast!

In this blog, I mostly write in English, although when I write about things that may also be important for my grandparents, then I also translate my posts into Estonian.

Week #2 - Synthetic hitchhike

Greeting to all fellow earthlings and other loose creatures! / Tervitused kõigile, kes on taaskord siia jõudnud!

As I promised to take up blogging again, then here I proudly stand, sharing all of the significant I have been doing or experiencing this fine week, although there has been nothing unprecedented.

Like I pointed out in the previous post, today and in future, I will write in English and give a brief summary in Estonian.

Enjoy and comment! / Nautige ja kommenteerige!

Films and TV-shows

First I will write about a TV-series that has had the most influence on me in the past few weeks. It is a show called Fringe that talks about a "Fringe division" team that is a part of Federal Bureau of Investigation acting under the supervision of Homeland Security. The team is investigating a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences, where masters of science are using the whole world as their testing lab - e.g. accelerated ageing, teleportation, bioterror weapons etc. While the story is unfolding, it is also revealed that there is a parallel universe and a war between those two worlds is only a step away. (I also included a trailer for the series)

You may ask, why is this series so influential to me and the answer is easy - it reanimated my old passion in science and made me realised that whatever I have been doing in the past two-to-three years, science always has and always will be the thing I want to dedicate my life to. So watching this series made me rethink about my future and this time I think I finally made a decision. But other than that, Fringe really is a really great and seductive show that I recommend to anyone interested in all this kind of unimaginable cool stuff.

Also this week was great, as after months, if not years of waiting The Avengers was finally released and apart of different people complaining that it did not include Spider-Man in it, the movie was great and if it would have been me, then I would have also left Spidey out, as he is not someone that would have fitted in this awesome movie. Anyhow, I have to say that this all time of waiting was worth it as Marvel did a great job, both releasing the movie and managing to not fuck up a superhero movie, where there are so many main heroes and even more villains. Although, if I have to nag about something, then why did the bad guys just die, when the mothership was destroyed - this was kind of lame, as it was like Marvel just ran out of money and had to quickly wrap the movie up. (There's also on of my favourite trailers for that movie coming below)

Further studies

As I have already written before and maybe even a week ago, then I have finally decided what field I will be studying in university or at least now I know what I want to become after finishing my studies (although, as someone once said, then if you want to prevent dying, keep learning, and that is what I will do). To get there, to become a scientist in fields like synthetic biology and maybe even systems biology, I have found out, that I should start by studying biochemistry or biotechnology, which are quite similar things in a way. So basically I have spent this whole week trying to gather knowledge of those fields and also been trying to find the most suitable universities, where I could study all of the things I might need.

From university side, after some e-mail exchange with different university professors and students studying similar fields and a hell of a lot surfing on university pages, I have noted that I will probably need to study in England (e.g. Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College or King's College) or in United States of America (e.g. Harvard or MIT) to get the education that I want to have, which most certainly means that I will have to start studying more and faster than I ever have. Also I got the dates for the open days of Cambridge and now I know, where I will be on the 5th and the 6th of July.

Other than making a research on different universities, I have spent most of my time reading all the topics concerning bio-world, that I am about to step into. I have discovered that the more I read about this stuff or watch different movies about it, the more interesting the subject seems to me and the more I want to know about it. As I believe, most people will know very little of biochemistry and such, then I will add some introductory videos, explaining some of the topics in 2-5 minutes each.

An introduction to genetic engineering - just giving a glimpse into it, not really giving any practical knowledge.

This video gives you a quick review of systems biology, a new and fun field of biology.

This video gave a good synopsis of synthetic biology, that's maybe the most interesting field of biology, combining genetic engineering & engineering itself - watch the video & you'll understand.

Of course I will continue studying all the fields I have studied so far (philosophy, psychology, management etc) and I will still want to become an entrepreneur, but now I finally know, what I want to study in university and what kind of a businessman I want to become.

Summer holiday

I have also made great progress in planning my summer holiday, that I was talking about in my last post. I have gathered a lot of knowledge on the topic of hitchhiking, I have tried to start making my trip route and I have got more information on my foreign visitor.

First about Tony - he told me that he will probably come to Estonia either on 29th, 30th or 31st of May and will leave on 28th, 29th or 30th of June - so basically, this June is planned as I  will spend it with Tony and anyone wanting to be a company for us is welcome to do so.

This week I also got together or talked via Skype to some of my friends who in the past years have gone hitchhiking in various parts of the world, although mostly still in Europe, but since I only want to hitchhike here in Europe as well, then the knowledge I have got from them is really valuable. Due to one of them I also made a coachsurfing account and I am now open to host different other hikers in Pärnu. Another person told me to make a to do list for the Europe trip, where I will have different "missions", that I should do, while being on a trip and so I ask the help of all of you to help me think, what kind of objectives should I set on myself.

Other than that I have just read a lot on the topic of hitchhiking and the most useful like that I managed to find is probably Hitchwiki, which is a full wiki-page, only full of different know-how for hitchhikers. As I mentioned before, then it is 100% sure that I will be in Cambridge on 5th to 6th of July - the rest of the schedule is still open.

On other notes

First two days of school were free due to the public holidays and in the second part of the week I managed to get a C for a history test and an A in English, when once again I had to talk and the teacher finally stopped me with the words, enough, you truly can speak a person to death as there is no stopping you (this made my day for that day). I also talked to Madis Talmar about him being tutor for my next research paper, probably on the topic of hitchhiking, although I am also thinking to maybe do it on my future studies topic.

On Friday I talked to one of the owners of A.P.T.E.K. and we will meet with her on Monday, to talk about my future in that bar.

This week we again did not have debating at King Street Basic School, as the students again had something else to do - maybe we are trying to find a more suitable day for that thing, but we will see about that.

Emily and I are probably drifting more apart than I thought we would, but in a way it is my fault we are doing it as in a way I need some time and space before we can start communicating more again, right now I am feeling awkward every time we do things together.

And this week I have also gone to roller-skating and cycling a couple of times. Today I even went to forest with my grand father to help him heap the wood.

* Esmaspäeval lähen A.P.T.E.Ki Kairiga kohtuma, rääkimaks minu mõttest seal ka tööd proovida.

And that's all! / Ja see on kõik!

Best regards! / Parimate soovidega!
